Loading a candle is essentially making a hole in the candle and filling the hole with powders, papers, herbs, and curios. This is traditionally done with figural or pillar candles, The practice does derive from southern american folk magick, and is often connected to hoodoo and root work, however container magick and wax magick goes back much further. There are a some vendors whom will do this practice for you, by carving the hole, and sealing your candle at a shop, or by modifying their molds to allow for a container space, that can be done on any portion of the candle top or bottom depending on the mold.
Once a candle is loaded and anointed, it establishes a strong link with the person on whom you are working.
The practice likely drew on earlier folk ideas (e.g. placing written petitions under church candles in Catholic novenas), but carving a candle and packing it internally.
